Shrestha - why so many in Nepal ?

Shrestha or Shresta (Nepali: श्रेष्ठ), is a surname belonging to the community of people in Nepal and India and trace their origin to Northern-Indian roots. They originate from the Indian state of Uttar Pradesh in India. During the reign of the Shah kings in Nepal, Shresthas used to work mostly as laborer in India. Even amongst Shresthas, there is a differentiation of caste, called 'thari', the difference being mostly between "panch thari" (5th level) and "ccha thari" (6th level). It is speculated that there is an additional "das thari" (10th level).

Often people from various parts of Nepal who are considered of lower caste (Sarki, Damai, Chyame etc.) have changed their last name to 'Shrestha' and that is the main reason why the number of people bearing 'Shrestha' as their last name has grown exponentially in the last couple of decades. That is also the reason for above 80 percent of people who have 'Shrestha' as their last name can't speak the Newari language.

It is also believed that another caste "Pradhan", originally pronounced as "Pa-Ra-Dhaan". Which means, rice carrier, also came from central parts of India. During Rana rule, Pradhans from different parts of Nepal started to pour in to Kathmandu and mixed themselves with Newars living in the valley. They were called "Pa-Ra-Dhaan" because their job was to carry huge sacks of rice on their backs, to transport from local Newars in Kathmandu to outside of the valley.

    2. Only some shresthas outside kathmandu valley and sourrounding valley feel difficult to speak newari .It also might be chance that they change their cast into shrestha due to globalization or who knows it.Actual shresthas are tibeto burman family n used to be lhasa newars.

  11. WTF?!

All the things written in this blog by the author is utterly false and completely misleading. Pradhan means 'Dhan'/rice carriers? Are you that stupid? That is like saying Dangol surnamed people are from Dang, or that Pant surnamed Bahuns make pants and jeans.

Shrestha, meaning noble/high-borne, used to be the administrators and nobility of Nepal during the Malla era, many of whose ancestry goes back to the Mallas and beyond. Similarly Pradhans were in fact a step above Shresthas in that they were originally Rajputs brought to marry Malla princesses and princes. In a way, yes these surnames are newer additions to Newars, compared to other Newar castes who have been living in Kathmandu for a lot longer. But that doesn't mean Shresthas and Pradhans are any less Newars as they have integrated themselves for many centuries now, NOT during the Rana rule as the author says. And to say that they were laborers for Ranas is just plain dumb.

One thing to understand is that Shrestha is one of a caste within the Newars, just like Uray, Jyapu, Kuma, Brahman, etc being other castes. Within this Shrestha caste there are many surnames or "Binas" like Pradhan, Joshi, Maskey, Rajbhandari, and over 30 others. So how did the name Shrestha rise up over the past decade? Well, one thing is many Shresthas (and I'm talking about the caste) themselves did not write Shrestha before, instead using their Bina or occupational/family name. Many of which are still used like Malla, Pradhan, Amatya, and many of which are not used today like Thakoou, Singh, Achaju etc. I guess a comparison would be Nepali Brahmins using just "Sharma" instead of Upadhaya, Dahal, Adhikari, etc. So it is the same people, but they only changed their last name. Since writing Shrestha for Shrestha Newars is equivalent to writing Sharma for Hill Brahmins, this might be a reason why Shrestha name increased so much in the past decade.

But yes there is credibility to say that many people from other Newar and non-newar castes have indeed changed their surname to Shrestha (in Nepal) and Pradhan (in Sikkim, Darjeeling.) The obvious reason was because they wanted to climb up the social hierarchy as Shrestha is the highest social class, behind the Newar Brahmins. After the democracy in 1950 and even during the Ranas, Shresthas somehow became affluent and respected compared to other Newars (this might have to do with Ranas favoring Hindu Shresthas compared to Buddhist Tuladhars, Shakyas, Manandhars, etc.) They got government jobs and other benefits. So there was an inclination for many lower caste people to change their name for better opportunities.

Another thing is that when Nepal was unified, majority of the people who went out of the valley and thus establishing new Newar trade towns were the rich, affluent Newar castes like Shresthas. So as years passed, Shretha name too flourished.

    2. @Raj Sth
I don't know much about Rajbhandari history except that they're too a surname of the Shrestha caste. They, along with a few other surnames like Malla, Joshi, Pradhan, Maskey, and others are the so called Chhathare Shresthas, or the Kshatriyas of Newari people. Their names suggests that they were the care-takers of bhandars of the court. They would have been something like Home and Finance Mininster in modern terms I guess.

  15. yes its true that many shrestha newars were gone outside valley,, for trade , outside valley mostly nepali languge were used , by passing of generation childern did teached nepalbhasa by parents, so these days many sherstha can't speak nepalbhasa,,,,
Hindu newar has two gotra that is bharadwaj and khasyap. bharadwaj are deo bhaju gotra, were as khasyap gotra is true chhathare shrestha gotra ,, panch thare shrestha are inclined shrestha from multiple background such as from jyapu, manandhar, other middle newar caste... So in newar caste shrestha most succes ful , most forward and dynamic newar caste ,,, campare to other newar caste ..
    Hindu Newars
Two core caste Deobhaju and Shyasya (shrestha)
Within deobhaju - karmacharya, rajopadhaya, bhatta
    With in chhathare Shrestha-
Malla, Maskey, Joshi, Rajbhandari, Pradhan Mool, Hada, kasaju, kayastha, Munshi, Lakhe, Khokhalie, Kakchhapati...
There are many sub caste of shrestha mainly they are found at bhaktapur...
By different occupation shrestha caste classified such as Rajbhandari and Pradhan were general army or warrior, Joshi were astrologer means jyotis of king, Malla- king, Munshi And Mool were area administrator, Lakhe were festival manager means they organise jatras,,,

  16. Bharadwaj and Kashyap are the 2 main gotras of Bhaktapure Hindu Newas only my friend. There are other gotras of Kathmandu and Patan Chhathari caste. I've seen Kathmandu Rajopadhya who have Bashisth, Atreya, Garg, Mallas and Pradhans of Patan have Kaushik, and others too.. Joshi, Rajbhandari, Piya (rathor, raaya) etcof Bhaktapur also have Bharadwaj and Kashyap.

And Deobhajus = Rajopadhyaya only. Bhatta are Tirute Bahun, Karmacharyas are Acharya who cannot marry deobhajus but can marry within shrestha caste. Some say Chathari = chetri (ksatriya) and panchthari = shrestha/shresthi (business caste) But majority of Newas who have gone outside of Kathmandu have called themselves shrestha and many low caste people use this surname so we don't know exactly who is who. There are also Pradhan of Sikkim and Darjeeling but Pradhan and Malla of Kathmandu do not marry with them; they think they are mixed with bhote and not real Chathare. same thing for shrestha because nobody can tell if real or not.

Mallas were kings, Rajbhandari were royal treasurers of Kathmandu and Bhaktapur, Pradhan were PaMahaJu pramukh maharathiju (chief of sena/military) and prime minister of Patan and Kathmandu (not Bhanktapur), amatya are only Mahaju (maharathiju) - military officer..pradhanang are chief military and prime minister of bhaktapur, etc..

  24. I have heard after Prithibinarayan invaded kathmandu. he made the life of newars like hell. and to escape from rule of shah. they started fleeing to different villages of nepal. specially not in the route of business like narayanghat, chitlang, trisulI and all. they flee to remote village to save their lives. and they removed their real surname and changed to shrestha.

that is also can be one of the reason to increase the population of shresthas.if anybody knows about this then please explain more . I was donig research on this , and couldnot find anything about this in every pages in google.

No prithivinarayan shah did not made newar peoples life hell, actully he preserved the newar culture and became part of it too.He was always invited to bhoto jatra and other jatra as a king .this is why we have not lost our identity aftre the take over of shah dinesty.he never pressured newar to change there way of living.yes he was angry with people of kirtipur because he lost 2 battles with them and lost his powerful army and loved ones so he cut the nose of people living in kirtipur.
